he Spanish dance classes, part of the dance program at Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago, under the auspices of the Music department in the College of Arts and Sciences, is an integral part of a liberal arts education open to all students. Dame Libby Komaiko, Spanish dance program founder & Professor Emerita and Irma Suarez Ruiz, Instructor of dance at NEIU, present and promote the three styles of Spanish dance & music. Via Spanish dance classes and productions in the university’s fine arts auditorium, recital hall and dance studios, these programs are presented in collaboration with faculty, students and guest artists. Whether participating on stage as dancers and choreographers or behind the scenes in lighting, sound, prop construction, costumes, publicity or marketing, students develop skills in leadership, cooperative and team building, planning, organizing, critical and creative thinking, among other skills. Many of the graduates continue their professional affiliation and training with the Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater and Center and the International American Spanish Dance and Music Festival. Performing and teaching via residencies and national and international touring are among the highlights of their experience
and continued success after graduation.
