Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater, founded by Dame Libby Komaiko, is Chicago’s world-class professional Spanish dance company under the dynamic leadership of Artistic Director, Irma Suárez Ruiz and Executive and Associate Artistic Director, Jorge Perez.
Ensemble Español presents performances and residencies in all aspects of Spanish culture—dance, music, visual arts, theater, classes, workshops. The company offers two touring options: a chamber size company of 8 dancers and 2-4 Flamenco musicians or its Flamenco Passion Extravaganza with 15-20 dancers and 4-8 musicians.
Their lavish concerts of original Spanish Classical ballets, folkloric suites, and fiery Flamenco dramas draw from a repertoire of over 135 works. In addition, the Ensemble performs Tales of Spain, a multimedia lecture concert series for grade school and high school students, and for the holidays, Concierto Navideño. Dame Libby Komaiko was the first American artist in history to be decorated with Spain’s highest honor, Lazo de Dama (Ribbon of the Dame), by the King of Spain for her artistic, cultural and educational work throughout the United States.
Ensemble Español‘s mission is the presentation, preservation and promotion of classical, escuela bolero, folkloric, flamenco and contemporary dance and music traditions of Spain. The company also appears with opera, chamber ensembles and orchestras and tours throughout the United States, including Hawaii and Puerto Rico, and has toured to Mexico, Costa Rica, Poland, Australia, China and Spain.
